Parental Involvement and Communication
The teaching staff feel strongly that an
important element in a child's education is
the relationship between the home and the school.
Parents are the child's first and most important teachers, especially in
the development of values and social skills. Classroom teachers direct a
more formal aspect of a child's learning at school. Both the home and
school must communicate freely and regularly in order that the healthy
and constructive growth of each child be realized.
Report cards designed by the teachers to reflect the curriculum and
their teaching
are issued in November, March and June. Parent-Teacher interviews are
held in
November and March, and all parents are scheduled for an interview. In
addition, parents can contact the school whenever they want to talk to a
teacher or the principal for
assistance in a school related matter, or for clarification or
reinforcement with academic
assignments or concerns. Conversely, the school will attempt to contact
parents whenever they feel an issue requires information or
consultation.
Teachers send home tests, exams or examples of student work. Homework
books
are occasionally used to help student organization and a newsletter of
information
pertinent to J.M. Young parents is sent home monthly with a member of
each family.
Special bulletins are sent home in the same way and notes between the
home and school
are exchanged as needed.
External testing such as C.T.B.S. testing is done by the school.
Information the school needs is gathered in a registration form each
fall.
Parents provide a number of services in the school: as volunteers,
spectators, providers of hot lunches, preparing pizzas and the like. A
parent council meets whenever it feels the need.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS & MEDICATIONS
If your child requires minor first aid or medical assistance at school,
we will provide it on a voluntary basis. When deemed appropriate, we
will make every endeavor to contact parent/guardian for direction, and
if necessary, arrange transportation to a
medical facility for treatment.
On the registration form, parents are requested to specify any
significant medical
conditions or any medications their child may be taking. Schools will
not administer
medication without consent and direction from the parent/guardian.
Tylenol (Acetaminophen, regular strength, 325mg) is no longer able to be
distributed to
students through the school office.
